Biography

Head shot of Jason Sardano

I started working for the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University in 2012 as a freelance developer creating web mapping applications. I was then tasked with designing processes that build Arnold Arboretum’s spatial data from its system of record. Since then, I have created field collection applications to assist staff with plant maintenance, have written internal applications that connect data from disparate systems to plant records, and many other applications.

I took a class in remote sensing while working on my bachelor’s degree in marine biology, which led to my interest in the spatial sciences. I decided to pursue a master’s degree in Spatial Information Science and Engineering from the University of Maine with the intent of combining the analysis of remote sensing imagery with marine science. While working on my master’s degree, I discovered the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which is what I ultimately decided on for my career path.

Professionally, I enjoy designing backend systems based on the Service Oriented Architecture design pattern and exposing the data via custom GIS applications. Personally, I enjoy spending my time hiking, boating, kayaking and travelling.
