The stem of a cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani, accession 4697*K) reaches skyward. This tree grew from seed collected by Walter Siehe in the Atlas Mountains of Turkey in 1900.

Trees that Shaped Civilization

Join docent Paul Eldrenkamp for a visit to five groups of trees that each played a particularly significant role in shaping five very different civilizations: Eastern White Pine, Cedar of Lebanon, Western Red Cedar, Oaks, and the five sacred trees of the Kiso Forest in Japan.

Accessibility: This walk will include paved roads and woodchip and gravel paths. 

Audience: This program is geared towards adults.

Weather Policy: Tours will be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind, snow, ice, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees. Tours may be canceled due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. If you have questions about the status of a program, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

By subway

Take the MBTA Orange Line to its southern end—Forest Hills. Exit through the door marked “Arnold Arboretum,” cross Washington Street, and take a left and walk up Washington Street. Enter the Washington Street Gate and walk along Blackwell Footpath. Cross the road and enter South Street Gate. Walk along Rhododendron Path and take a left onto Hemlock Hill Road. Bussey Street Gate will be on your left at the end of Hemlock Hill Road.

By bus

Take the #35 or #38 bus to Centre Street opposite Walter Street. Cross Centre Street onto Walter Street, and after a short distance, take a left onto Bussey Street. Bussey Street Gate will be on the left.

By car

There is public parking available along Bussey Street. Take care not to park on the sidewalk or you will risk a ticket.
