Did you know that the Weld Hill Research Building at the Arboretum has the largest geothermal heating system at Harvard? There are 88 wells hidden under the namesake hill which help heat and cool the state-of-the-art research building. Join Head of Operations and Project Management Danny Schissler for a behind-the-scenes look at this fascinating system.

This tour will be a mix of indoors and outdoors.

Accessibility: This program involves walking short distances.

Audience: This members-only program is geared towards adults.

Inclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Take the MBTA Orange Line to its southern end—Forest Hills. Exit through the door marked “Arnold Arboretum.” Cross Washington Street and walk up Arborway to the Arboretum’s Forest Hills Gate on your left. Enter the gate and walk straight up the road. Take a left onto Beech Path and continue until it turns into a paved road (Hemlock Hill Road). Walk down Hemlock Hill Road. Just before Bussey Street Gate, turn right onto the dirt road and walk straight ahead to Walter Street Gate. Cross the road and take the dirt driveway to the Weld Hill Building parking lot.

By bus

Take the #35 or #38 to Centre Street @ Weld Hill. Walk northeast up Centre Street, past Weld Street, and take a right into the Weld Hill parking lot.

By car

There is a parking lot at the Weld Hill Research Building available for program participants.
