The Founder of Modern Botany in China: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Hu Hsen-Hsu (aka H.H. Hu, Hu Xiansu)
Join us to celebrate the life, groundbreaking scientific work, and legacy of Hu Hsen-Hsu (aka H.H. Hu, Hu Xiansu) on the 100th anniversary of his doctoral degree from Harvard. After conducting his doctoral work at the Arnold Arboretum under the direction of Professor John Jack, Hu returned to China where he co-founded or led several of the country’s most important botanical institutions, such as the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology, the Botanical Society of China, and the Lushan Botanical Garden. In 1948, Hu and his colleague Zheng Wanjun (Cheng Wan Chun) announced to the world the identification of the “living fossil” Metasequoia glyptostroboides or dawn redwood, a species previously considered extinct. The Metasequoia seeds that Hu sent to the Arnold Arboretum that same year are now majestic trees that grace the Arboretum and stand as its logo – an enduring symbol of natural beauty, scientific discovery, and international cooperation.
This online event will feature Arnold Arboretum Director William (Ned) Friedman, Chief Scientist at the China National Botanical Garden (North Garden) Ma Jinshuang, Professor of Sociology at Beijing Normal University Hu Xiaojiang (granddaughter of Hu Hsen-Hsu), and other speakers discussing Hu’s life and influence. Free and open to the public. Registration required.
Due to this program’s international audience, the webinar will begin at 7:00am Eastern Standard Time and 20:00-21:30 China Standard Time. We will provide translation from English to Chinese and Chinese to English.

中国现代植物学奠基人：胡先骕的生平与遗产纪念活动
值此胡先骕 (Hu Hsen-Hsu) 获哈佛大学博士学位 100 周年之际，我们诚邀您共同缅怀他的生平、开创性科研工作及其不朽遗产。胡先骕在阿诺德植物园师从 John Jack 教授完成博士研究后返回中国，参与创办并领导了中国多个重要植物学机构，包括中国植物学会和庐山植物园。1948 年，胡先骕与同事郑万钧 (Cheng Wan Chun) 向世界宣布了“活化石”水杉 (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) ——此前被认为已灭绝——的鉴定成果。同年，胡先骕寄往阿诺德植物园的水杉种子如今已长成参天大树，装点着植物园并成为其标志——象征着自然之美、科学探索与国际合作的永恒符号。
本次线上活动将邀请阿诺德植物园园长 William (Ned) Friedman、中国国家植物园（北园）首席科学家马金双、北京师范大学社会学教授胡晓江（胡先骕孙女）等嘉宾，共话胡先骕的生平与影响。活动免费向公众开放。需提前注册。
