Members-Only Caterpillar Walk with Sam Jaffee

The Caterpillar Lab is moving in, and while the exhibit will be full of their munching critters and offer lots to explore, the real story is the one going on outside where these creatures are living out their strange lives in the wild. Join Director of the Caterpillar Lab Sam Jaffe on a walk around the property exploring for native caterpillars and other insects. Learn how the Caterpillar Lab finds all of their caterpillars, learn about host plants and parasitoids, and get all of the caterpillar-finding secrets from one of the foremost caterpillar hunters in the world!

Because the caterpillars are much more mobile than our trees and shrubs, there’s no saying how many we will or won’t find this time: but either way there will be lots of great info about host plants and how to find caterpillars on other days!

This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join!

Accessibility: The walk will involve navigating uneven terrain, possibly including woodchip, gravel, and dirt paths.

Audience: This walk is appropriate for naturalists, gardeners, and explorers both young and old. It may not be appropriate for more casually interested young children.

By subway

Take the MBTA Orange Line to its southern end—Forest Hills. Exit through the door marked “Arnold Arboretum,” cross Washington Street, and walk up Arborway to the Arboretum’s Forest Hills Gate on your left. To reach the Arboretum’s Arborway Gate and the Hunnewell Building, continue along the sidewalk on the Arborway to the Arborway Gate (about 12 minutes), or go through the gate, bear right at the pond, and continue to the Hunnewell Building, which will be on your left.

By bus

Take the #39 bus to the South Street @ Bardwell Street stop in Jamaica Plain. Walk down South Street away from Bardwell Street, take a right on Custer Street, and walk down Custer Street until it ends. Turn right and walk about 300 feet down Arborway to the Arboretum’s Arborway Gate, which will be across the street. The Hunnewell Building is just inside the gate on your right.

By car

There is public parking available on Arborway, including six designated accessible spots on either side of Arborway gate.
