SUMMARY:Tree Mob: Forsythia
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nThe Arboretum’s Forsythia collection is not only a beautiful display of yellow every spring\, but it is also one of the most significant of its kind on the planet. Such is its importance that it is one of the eight Nationally Accredited Collections at the Arnold Arboretum. Some of these accessions were collected from the wild in Asia (including North Korea) while others are cultivars introduced by Arboretum scientists and others to improve the ornamental merits of the genus. Join Keeper of the Living Collections Michael Dosmann on a stroll to learn more about Forsythia and some of the storied plants that grow here. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program is on paved roads and mowed grass. Participants will need to navigate some moderate slopes. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:Magnolias in Bloom: Music Inspired by Nature
DESCRIPTION:Gather at the magnolias for a one-of-a-kind concert celebrating this beautiful collection in peak bloom. Chloe DeSteno and Ariana Mascari\, graduate students at the New England Conservatory\, have assembled a collection of musical pieces about the magnolias\, their cultural and historical impact\, as well as plants and the Arboretum more broadly–including one original piece composed for the Arboretum’s magnolia collection itself. The concert will feature a chamber ensemble playing genres from Renaissance to jazz\, all rooted in classical music. \n\n\n\nSeating will be on the grass. We recommend bringing a blanket or lawn chair to sit on if desired\, as chairs will not be provided. \n\n\n\nRain date: April 12\, 3:00-4:00pm. Registrants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be rescheduled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be rescheduled with less than one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Hunnewell lawn is flat and just off the main road\, which is just inside the Arboretum’s main entrance at Arborway Gate. \n\n\n\nAudience: This performance is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:Explorers Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Explorers Garden rests in a microclimate just below the summit of Bussey Hill. This nearly five-acre site provides ideal growing conditions for many species that have been challenging to grow in less protected areas of the Arboretum. As such\, it has proven to be a perfect testing ground for plants collected in the expeditions of E. H. Wilson in the early 1900s to the NACPEC  (North America-China Plant Exploration Consortium) expeditions of our own time. Join docent Marie Herbert for a guided tour to learn more about some of the plants showcased in this special collection and to hear stories of the plant exploration expeditions that brought them to the Arboretum. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This tour will include paved roads and woodchip paths. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed toe walking shoes. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; temperatures below 20 degrees; or other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email or call the Visitor Center at (617) 384-5209 between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Nature Amplified: The Secret Sounds of Trees
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nIf our ears were 100 times more powerful than they are\, we would be able to hear the sounds produced by trees themselves: water moving through the trunks and branches\, the creak of the wood in the wind\, and small critters moving around in the wood or the canopy. We would even be able to hear how plants receive and respond to sound waves produced by other beings. Our ears are not this powerful\, but artist\, researcher\, and Harvard Graduate School of Design fellow Jacek Smolicki has created microphones and recording systems that are. \n\n\n\nJoin Jacek for an indoor introduction to his specialized microphone technology\, then move outside for a walk to try out the microphones around the landscape and listen to the amplified sounds they create. \n\n\n\nParticipants will use headphones on the walk: you are welcome to bring your own headphones\, though we will provide some as well. Wired and over-the-ear are ideal: bluetooth will not work. \n\n\n\nThis program is part of the Walking Festival of Sound: visit www.wfos.net to learn more. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program will include a walk on paved paths and occasional grass and foliage. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:Soundscapes of the Arboretum: A Drop-in Event
DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Hunnewell lawn to experience the sounds of the Arboretum in a new way. View the sound of wind or birdsong through special spectrograms; participate in a “sound to sketch activity” to draw what you’re hearing with a friend or family member; work with a birder to learn how to identify birds from their unique calls; and listen to the sounds of a tree or soil amplified through specially designed microphones. \n\n\n\nWe recommend bringing a set of wired headphones if you have them. We will also have headphones available. \n\n\n\nRegistration is not required for this program. \n\n\n\nJacek Smolicki is a sound artist and researcher with the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Amanda McCluskey and Isabella Febbroriello are recent MassArt graduates with degrees from the Studio for Interrelated Media. They contribute to outreach for Sound Travels\, an educational research project about sound and learning in informal environments. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event takes place on flat mowed grass just off the main road. \n\n\n\nAudience: This event is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: This program will be cancelled or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather and this page will be updated to reflect the change. If the forecast looks poor\, please check this page to determine the event’s status. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.
