SUMMARY:Birding at the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn more about the feathered friends you see and hear on a walk through the Arnold Arboretum? If so\, please join birders and volunteers TJ and Allison for a leisurely 90-minute bird watching walk. We will cover a variety of habitats and focus on the changes that seasonal migration brings to our resident birds\, so come back often to keep up with the seasons! No homework is required\, but binoculars are helpful for spotting in the trees. We’re looking forward to birding with you! \n\n\n\nThis walk takes place during the peak of Spring migration in Boston\, which means you have a great chance of seeing a higher number of birds and and different types of birds as they move through the area. Don’t miss it!

SUMMARY:The Cosmic Tree: A Universal Symbol of Life: Flowering Trees
DESCRIPTION:Cosmologies are ways of understanding the nature of the universe\, of experiencing the world in all its variations including the visible and the invisible. Over millennia trees have served as the mythological archetype of the world’s axis (axis mundi)\, the pole through the earth’s center which connects the worlds above and below. Within a cosmic-magical model of the world  (imago mundi)\, trees also evolved in various cultures to possess innate spiritual powers or as conduits for communication with the holy or sacred. \n\n\n\nDuring this tour we will discuss angiosperms\, the largest and most diverse group in the plant kingdom. All flowering trees are angiosperms\, but not all angiosperms reproduce in the same way\, so you may not see blooms and flowers but plenty of leaves. Docent Katrina Scott will lead this interactive tour with stops for moments to reflect on specific trees and the stories associated with them. Were they revered or feared?  A home for deities or tricksters?  We will begin at the Center Street Gate starting at Jack Dawson’s shagbark hickory (1883) then head up Oak Path to Beech Path ending at Bussey Hill Road after visiting the ash trees of Norse mythology (Yggdrasil.). \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This walk will include woodchip and gravel paths. Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring a cloth/towel/mat for sitting/lying down. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours will be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees. Tours may be canceled due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event.

SUMMARY:"When Trees Testify" by Beronda Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:Join plant biologist and author Beronda Montgomery for a discussion of her new book\, When Trees Testify: Science\, Wisdom\, History\, and America’s Black Botanical Legacy. Montgomery explores the way that eight trees and shrubs testify to the experience of black Americans\, from sycamores that acted as landmarks for those trying to escape slavery\, to pecan propagation spearheaded by an enslaved African woman\, to the traditional medicinal uses of willow bark in black communities. Montgomery takes us through black American history with trees and shrubs as our guides. \n\n\n\nBooks will be available for sale at the end of the talk. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Hunnewell Lecture Hall is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!
