Native Wildflower Identification

How can you tell different goldenrods apart? How can you use shape and scent to identify a plant? And what exactly is that aster in your backyard? Join Horticulturist Brendan Keegan for a Native Wildflower Identification class to answer these questions and more, and find out which ones to plant in your garden along the way. This program takes place at the pollinator meadow at Weld Hill, a haven for native wildflowers at the Arboretum.

Accessibility: This program involves a short walk on pavement, mulch paths, and mowed grass.

Audience: This program is geared towards adults.

By subway

Take the MBTA Orange Line to its southern end—Forest Hills. Exit through the door marked “Arnold Arboretum.” Cross Washington Street and walk up Arborway to the Arboretum’s Forest Hills Gate on your left. Enter the gate and walk straight up the road. Take a left onto Beech Path and continue until it turns into a paved road (Hemlock Hill Road). Walk down Hemlock Hill Road. Just before Bussey Street Gate, turn right onto the dirt road and walk straight ahead to Walter Street Gate. Cross the road and take the dirt driveway to the Weld Hill Building parking lot.

By bus

Take the #35 or #38 to Centre Street @ Weld Hill. Walk northeast up Centre Street, past Weld Street, and take a right into the Weld Hill parking lot.

By car

There is a parking lot at the Weld Hill Research Building available for program participants.
