SUMMARY:The Cosmic Tree: A Universal Symbol of Life: Flowering Trees
DESCRIPTION:Cosmologies are ways of understanding the nature of the universe\, of experiencing the world in all its variations including the visible and the invisible. Over millennia trees have served as the mythological archetype of the world’s axis (axis mundi)\, the pole through the earth’s center which connects the worlds above and below. Within a cosmic-magical model of the world  (imago mundi)\, trees also evolved in various cultures to possess innate spiritual powers or as conduits for communication with the holy or sacred. \n\n\n\nDuring this tour we will discuss angiosperms\, the largest and most diverse group in the plant kingdom. All flowering trees are angiosperms\, but not all angiosperms reproduce in the same way\, so you may not see blooms and flowers but plenty of leaves. Docent Katrina Scott will lead this interactive tour with stops for moments to reflect on specific trees and the stories associated with them. Were they revered or feared?  A home for deities or tricksters?  We will begin at the Center Street Gate starting at Jack Dawson’s shagbark hickory (1883) then head up Oak Path to Beech Path ending at Bussey Hill Road after visiting the ash trees of Norse mythology (Yggdrasil.). \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This walk will include woodchip and gravel paths. Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring a cloth/towel/mat for sitting/lying down. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours will be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees. Tours may be canceled due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event.

SUMMARY:Living Trees\, Living Traditions: Cultural Perspectives on Plant Use
DESCRIPTION:Trees have long played an important role in cultures around the world. On this tour\, we delve into the ethnobotany of trees – how people of different cultures and regions made use of woody plants for food\, medicine\, everyday wooden objects\, dyes\, fibers\, oils\, resins\, gums\, soaps\, waxes\, tannins.  Join docent Vicki Amalfitano to explore how groups from many regions and traditions have historically used bark\, roots\, and leaves from native and exotic trees we have growing at the Arnold Arboretum for a variety of uses. The focus is on cultural knowledge\, meaning\, and relationship—not on medical instruction or other advice.

SUMMARY:Arnoldia Spotlight: Reading the Landscape as Historical Text
DESCRIPTION:This program has been cancelled. \n\n\n\nThis is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nBefore this landscape became an Arboretum\, part of it belonged to a black landowner and farmer named Simeon Giles. A Harvard seminar called Slavery\, the Environment\, and Public History explored what we can learn about Giles and his family by reading the landscape today: which of the trees here were present at that time? What would Giles have cultivated here\, and how might the lay of the land have impacted his livelihood? Harvard graduate student Riley Sutherland wrote an article in the summer feature of Arnoldia describing the course and what they learned\, and she will be heading out into the landscape again along with Horticulturist Brendan Keegan and Arnoldia Editor Matthew Battles to share what they learned about Giles\, the history of this land\, and the stories landscapes tell. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves traversing moderate hills\, uneven ground\, and dirt paths. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling: A Virtual Program
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nAre you trying to get (back) into a nature-journaling practice? Interested in discovering a new\, creative way to engage with the world of trees? Join this online\, interactive session for some spontaneous and expressive artmaking\, inspired by a tree near you! We will gather online to respond creatively to the trees in our respective corners of the world. The session consists of various free-form sketchbook experiments that celebrate the diversity of tree form. \n\n\n\nAll levels are welcome: neither botanical knowledge nor previous drawing experience are required. \n\n\n\nBring your own plant materials from a tree near you (twigs\, leaves\, flowers\, seeds\, pieces of bark– anything that sparks your interest!) as well as art supplies like paper\, scissors\, markers\, glue\, and tape. We will send a full list via email. \n\n\n\nThis activity is led by botanist and creative facilitator Kristel Schoonderwoerd. Kristel spent many years in the living collections of the Arnold Arboretum gathering data for her PhD degree. She currently lives and creates on her narrowboat on the British Canal and facilitates (online) nature-inspired artmaking events. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards ages 12+ \n\n\n\nZoom link: You will receive a Zoom link when you register below.

SUMMARY:Research Spotlight: Biodiversity in the Solar Pollinator Meadow
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nThe Horticulture team planted the Solar Array Pollinator Meadow to provide a habitat for a wide variety of insects\, birds\, and other pollinators under and around the Weld Hill solar panels. But until recently\, they had no good way of knowing just how well their experiment was working–that is\, until naturalist Louise Miller took it on as a research project for her Mass Audubon Field Certification. Miller conducted a biodiversity survey of the meadow and recorded 70 species of plants and nearly 300 species of non-plant creatures\, from snails and mushrooms to insects and salamanders. Join Miller to learn about the diversity she found here\, view some of her incredible photographs\, and get a chance to record some observations yourself. \n\n\n\nThis is an outdoor program that meets in front of the Weld Hill Research Building. \n\n\n\nWe will be using iNaturalist (IOS\, Android) to record species observations at the end of the program; we recommend downloading the app ahead of time. There will also be field guides available for anyone who would rather not use the app. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves a small amount of walking on pavement with a mild hill.

SUMMARY:Tree Mob: Beneficial Mites
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nHave you ever noticed the small tufts of hair found at the intersection of veins on a maple leaf? These structures\, called mite domatia\, provide shelter and protection for predatory mites\, which defend the plant against herbivores and pathogens in return. Join University of Michigan Postdoc and 2026 Carvão Awardee Marianne Azevedo Silva to learn about this mutualistic relationship and the research she is conducting on the mites themselves. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program may involve navigating mulch\, gravel\, and dirt paths. \n\n\n\nImage credit: Robert Pemberton\, Charles Turner
