SUMMARY:Explorers Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Explorers Garden rests in a microclimate just below the summit of Bussey Hill. This nearly five-acre site provides ideal growing conditions for many species that have been challenging to grow in less protected areas of the Arboretum. As such\, it has proven to be a perfect testing ground for plants collected in the expeditions of E. H. Wilson in the early 1900s to the NACPEC  (North America-China Plant Exploration Consortium) expeditions of our own time. Join docent Marie Herbert for a guided tour to learn more about some of the plants showcased in this special collection and to hear stories of the plant exploration expeditions that brought them to the Arboretum. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This tour will include paved roads and woodchip paths. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed toe walking shoes. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; temperatures below 20 degrees; or other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email or call the Visitor Center at (617) 384-5209 between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Birding at the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn more about the feathered friends you see and hear on a walk through the Arnold Arboretum? If so\, please join birders and volunteers TJ and Allison for a leisurely 90-minute bird watching walk. We will cover a variety of habitats and focus on the changes that seasonal migration brings to our resident birds\, so come back often to keep up with the seasons! No homework is required\, but binoculars are helpful for spotting in the trees. We’re looking forward to birding with you! \n\n\n\nThis walk takes place during the peak of Spring migration in Boston\, which means you have a great chance of seeing a higher number of birds and and different types of birds as they move through the area. Don’t miss it!

SUMMARY:The Cosmic Tree: A Universal Symbol of Life: Flowering Trees
DESCRIPTION:Cosmologies are ways of understanding the nature of the universe\, of experiencing the world in all its variations including the visible and the invisible. Over millennia trees have served as the mythological archetype of the world’s axis (axis mundi)\, the pole through the earth’s center which connects the worlds above and below. Within a cosmic-magical model of the world  (imago mundi)\, trees also evolved in various cultures to possess innate spiritual powers or as conduits for communication with the holy or sacred. \n\n\n\nDuring this tour we will discuss angiosperms\, the largest and most diverse group in the plant kingdom. All flowering trees are angiosperms\, but not all angiosperms reproduce in the same way\, so you may not see blooms and flowers but plenty of leaves. Docent Katrina Scott will lead this interactive tour with stops for moments to reflect on specific trees and the stories associated with them. Were they revered or feared?  A home for deities or tricksters?  We will begin at the Center Street Gate starting at Jack Dawson’s shagbark hickory (1883) then head up Oak Path to Beech Path ending at Bussey Hill Road after visiting the ash trees of Norse mythology (Yggdrasil.). \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This walk will include woodchip and gravel paths. Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring a cloth/towel/mat for sitting/lying down. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours will be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees. Tours may be canceled due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event.

SUMMARY:"When Trees Testify" by Beronda Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:Join plant biologist and author Beronda Montgomery for a discussion of her new book\, When Trees Testify: Science\, Wisdom\, History\, and America’s Black Botanical Legacy. Montgomery explores the way that eight trees and shrubs testify to the experience of black Americans\, from sycamores that acted as landmarks for those trying to escape slavery\, to pecan propagation spearheaded by an enslaved African woman\, to the traditional medicinal uses of willow bark in black communities. Montgomery takes us through black American history with trees and shrubs as our guides. \n\n\n\nBooks will be available for sale at the end of the talk. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Hunnewell Lecture Hall is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:Charles Sprague Sargent and the American Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Many are aware of Charles Sprague Sargent’s role as first director of the Arnold Arboretum\, establishing it as the world-renowned institution it is today. Far fewer are familiar with how his close relationships and prolific correspondence with figures of national and international prominence in the developing fields of botany\, horticulture\, forestry\, and wilderness preservation or his leadership of seminal public sector projects such as his path-breaking survey of United States forests for the 1880 US Census shaped the American landscape far beyond the Arboretum’s walls. Docent Paul Eldrenkamp will lead a tour that explores the far-reaching influence — then and now– of the Arboretum’s first director.   \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This walk will include paved roads and woodchip and gravel paths.  \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees or due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. SUMMARY:Research Spotlight: Bio-Controls for Black Swallow-Wort
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nBlack swallow-wort is a highly invasive vine in the U.S. and Canada\, but in Europe it grows benignly\, kept in check by a number of insect herbivores that only live in that part of the world. But what if we could bring one of those insects to New England? Could it control this highly invasive plant? Professor Lisa Tewksbury from the University of Rhode Island has released a number of Hypena opulenta moths in the Arboretum to see if it would control the black swallow-wort here\, and now it’s time to return to that part of the landscape and see if the experiment has worked. Join Professor Tewksbury for a Research Spotlight to learn about her work and see if we can find evidence of Hypena opulenta larva on the black swallow-wort plants here. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves some moderate hills and off-path terrain. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is appropriate for ages 12+. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.
