SUMMARY:Fearless\, Sleepless\, Deathless by Maria Pinto
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by popular Mushroom Hunt instructor Maria Pinto on her new book\, Fearless\, Sleepless\, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment\, Poison\, Ecology\, Hidden Histories\, Zombies\, and Black Survival. Maria weaves together memoir\, mycology\, and cultural history to illuminate the deep and surprising ways fungi connect with human life. With vivid storytelling and a fiercely original voice\, she explores fungi not just as biological wonders but as tools of survival\, subversion\, and spiritual sustenance—especially for those living at the margins. \n\n\n\nMaria Pinto is a Boston-area writer\, mycophile\, and educator who was born in Jamaica and grew up in South Florida. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Hunnewell Lecture Hall is wheelchair-accessible. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:The Cosmic Tree: A Universal Symbol of Life: Ginkgoes and Conifers
DESCRIPTION:Cosmologies are ways of understanding the nature of the universe\, of experiencing the world in all its variations including the visible and the invisible. Over millennia trees have served as the mythological archetype of the world’s axis (axis mundi)\, the pole through the earth’s center which connects the worlds above and below. Within a cosmic-magical model of the world (imago mundi)\, trees also evolved in various cultures to possess innate spiritual powers or as conduits for communication with the holy or sacred. \n\n\n\nDocent Katrina Scott will lead this interactive tour with stops for moments to reflect on specific trees and the stories associated with them. Were they revered or feared?  A home for deities or tricksters?  We will begin at the Walter Street Gate to visit the oldest ginkgoes at the Arboretum\, then head up the Conifer Path and diverge to walk\, rest\, and reflect among various conifers\, eventually ending by the yews near Bussey Brook and Hemlock Hill Road.  Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring a cloth/towel/mat for sitting/lying down.

SUMMARY:Winter Tree ID
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nWinter can feel like one of the hardest times to identify trees\, with most of their characteristic leaves and flowers gone for the season. But with help from experienced horticulturist and plant science teacher Nicole Forsyth\, you can start identifying common winter trees from the woods and streets of Massachusetts based only on their bark\, buds\, twigs\, and persistent fruit. This class will begin indoors with a presentation in the lecture hall\, and then move outside for some identification practice in the landscape. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This outdoor portion of this program will take place on paved roads\, gravel paths\, and grassy areas. There may be ice or snow\, so wear sturdy footwear! \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nThe Arboretum landscape doesn’t go to sleep in the winter: in fact winter is the best time to see the bright stems of red twig twig dogwood\, the glossy leaves of fragrant daphne\, and the feathery needles of plum yew. SUMMARY:Peters Hill in Winter
DESCRIPTION:Get a new perspective on some of the amazing trees on Peters Hill during this one-hour seasonal tour. SUMMARY:W.S. Merwin: A Talk and Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:This event was rescheduled from March 21. \n\n\n\nW.S. Merwin was famed for his poetry\, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry twice and named the United States Poet Laureate in 2010. But he was also a nature enthusiast with a deep concern for conservation. Merwin bought a plot of former agricultural land in Maui in 1977 and spent 40 years revitalizing the land\, planting nearly 3\,000 species of palm trees\, and the estate is now recognized as one of the most important collections of palms in the world. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a talk and poetry reading celebrating Merwin’s legacy. Speakers will include Sonnet Coggins\, Executive Director of the Merwin Conservancy that was set up to care for Merwin’s land after his death in 2019\, and Matthew Battles\, Arnoldia Editor and author of a feature article on Merwin for this season’s Arnoldia issue. After the talk and Q&A with the audience\, we will move into a participatory poetry reading of Merwin’s works; attendees are welcome to take a turn reading or can simply sit back and listen. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program takes place in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall\, which is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:The Architecture of Trees
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nIn winter\, when all the leaves have fallen\, the stark and beautiful forms of the bare trees suddenly come into focus. It becomes clear that not all tree forms are alike: some trees are cone-shaped\, some round\, some have steep branch angles\, others have branches that stick straight out from the trunk. Join Director of Horticulture and Landscape Rodney Eason for a walk to explore tree architecture at the Arboretum and learn how to use tree form to help identify trees in the winter\, and how the different forms help or harm the trees throughout their lives. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program may involve walking over mulch and gravel paths\, grass\, and off-path terrain. Participants will need to navigate Valley Road\, which is a moderate hill.
