SUMMARY:Make Nature Art Like Andy Goldsworthy
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join! \n\n\n\nUse the freshly fallen leaves at the Arboretum to make beautiful art\, just like the famed nature artist Andy Goldsworthy. This is a chance to play in the leaves and make something beautiful– even if it only lasts until the next gust of wind! \n\n\n\nWe will meet in front of the Hunnewell Visitor Center and then walk to the maple collection\, collecting materials along the way. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves a short walk over paved roads to the grassy maple collection. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is suitable for all ages. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:Writing in the Company of Trees
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join! \n\n\n\nIn our perilous times\, trees offer examples of resilience and precariousness\, growth and generosity. How do we invite them into our writing? Join Matthew Battles\, editor of Arnoldia\, the Arboretum’s quarterly magazine\, for an immersive workshop to practice writing under\, about\, and in collaboration with trees. \n\n\n\nParticipants will engage trees in the Arboretum’s collection while writing\, reflecting\, and sharing their discoveries. About half of the program will be outdoors in the landscape and half indoors in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall. \n\n\n\nPlease bring a notebook or other writing materials that are manageable in the field. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves walking along wooded paths\, climbing some moderate slopes\, and navigating uneven terrain. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:Seed Propagation at the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from October 5 due to construction. \n\n\n\nThis is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join! \n\n\n\nMany of us assume that growing plants from seed is as simple as opening a seed packet and sticking them in the dirt\, but many of the trees and shrubs in the Arboretum’s collections require a complicated process of stratification\, maceration\, and dormancy breaking before they will sprout. Join Arboretum Propagator Sarah Shank for a workshop on growing these plants from seed and get a chance to try your own hand at germinating seed from Arboretum trees and shrubs. \n\n\n\nThe class will begin with a presentation on the biology of seed dormancy and germination\, and then we will move into the hands-on portion where participants get experience preparing seeds from fruits and dry capsules\, scarifying seeds with different dormancy types\, and finally sowing some seeds to take home. We will round off the experience with a brief tour of the seed treatment facilities and seedling greenhouse. \n\n\n\nAll participants will go home with a tray of seeds they planted. We will be focusing on plants that can easily be grown in a front or backyard\, so you don’t need to worry about finding a place for a 100-foot-tall tree! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program takes place indoors in the wheelchair-accessible DGH classroom and outdoors on mowed grass. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:The Cosmic Tree: A Universal Symbol of Life: Ginkgoes & Conifers
DESCRIPTION:Cosmologies are ways of understanding the nature of the universe\, of experiencing the world in all its variations including the visible and the invisible. Over millennia trees have served as the mythological archetype of the world’s axis (axis mundi)\, the pole through the earth’s center which connects the worlds above and below. Within a cosmic-magical model of the world  (imago mundi)\, trees also evolved in various cultures to possess innate spiritual powers or as conduits for communication with the holy or sacred. \n\n\n\nDocent Katrina Scott will lead this interactive tour with stops for moments to reflect on specific trees and the stories associated with them. Were they revered or feared?  A home for deities or tricksters?  We will begin at the Walter Street Gate to visit the oldest ginkgoes at the Arboretum\, then head up the Conifer Path and diverge to walk\, rest\, and reflect among various conifers\, eventually ending by the yews near Bussey Brook and Hemlock Hill Road.  \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This walk will include woodchip and gravel paths. Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring a cloth/towel/mat for sitting/lying down. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees or due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email or call the Visitor Center at (617) 384-5209 between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Tree Mob: The Oldest Tree in the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nLong before this landscape had ever dreamed of becoming an Arboretum\, a white oak grew quietly on the slopes of Peters Hill. Years passed and Arboretum staff eventually incorporated this very old tree into our official collections\, making it possibly the oldest accessioned tree in the landscape. Join Assistant Curator Miles Sax for a Tree Mob to learn about this oak\, what the landscape looked like before it was an Arboretum\, the science of tree age\, and how the Arboretum manages those trees that we never chose to plant but which are a treasured part of our collections nonetheless. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves walking over mulch and paved paths and up a moderate hill. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:The Founder of Modern Botany in China: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Hu Hsen-Hsu (aka H.H. Hu\, Hu Xiansu)
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the life\, groundbreaking scientific work\, and legacy of Hu Hsen-Hsu (aka H.H. Hu\, Hu Xiansu) on the 100th anniversary of his doctoral degree from Harvard. After conducting his doctoral work at the Arnold Arboretum under the direction of Professor John Jack\, Hu returned to China where he co-founded or led several of the country’s most important botanical institutions\, such as the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology\, the Botanical Society of China\, and the Lushan Botanical Garden. In 1948\, Hu and his colleague Zheng Wanjun (Cheng Wan Chun) announced to the world the identification of the “living fossil” Metasequoia glyptostroboides or dawn redwood\, a species previously considered extinct. The Metasequoia seeds that Hu sent to the Arnold Arboretum that same year are now majestic trees that grace the Arboretum and stand as its logo – an enduring symbol of natural beauty\, scientific discovery\, and international cooperation.    \n\n\n\nThis online event will feature Arnold Arboretum Director William (Ned) Friedman\, Chief Scientist at the China National Botanical Garden (North Garden) Ma Jinshuang\, Professor of Sociology at Beijing Normal University Hu Xiaojiang (granddaughter of Hu Hsen-Hsu)\, and other speakers discussing Hu’s life and influence. Free and open to the public. Registration required.    \n\n\n\nDue to this program’s international audience\, the webinar will begin at 7:00am Eastern Standard Time and 20:00-21:30 China Standard Time. We will provide translation from English to Chinese and Chinese to English. \n\n\n\nYou will receive Zoom login information by email before the program.

SUMMARY:Birding at the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn more about the feathered friends you see and hear on a walk through the Arnold Arboretum? If so\, please join birders and volunteers TJ and Allison for a leisurely 90-minute bird watching walk. We will cover a variety of habitats and focus on the changes that seasonal migration brings to our resident birds\, so come back often to keep up with the seasons! No homework is required\, but binoculars are helpful for spotting in the trees. Sign up early to receive updates and some helpful materials by email. We’re looking forward to birding with you! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This tour covers slightly over 1 mile in distance over terrain of asphalt\, crushed granite\, and mulch. Please be sure to dress for the weather and wear comfortable\, closed toe footwear you don’t mind getting dirty. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees. SUMMARY:Flower Visitors at the Arboretum: Can Honeybees and Native Pollinators Co-Exist?
DESCRIPTION:Most of us know honeybees for the delicious honey they create (and the occasional sting!). But for scientists\, the non-native honeybee represents a potential threat to our native bumblebees and butterflies. Biology professor Dr. Richard Primack has been studying these insects at the Arboretum\, observing flower visitors at over 600 plant species to determine if honeybees and native pollinators can co-exist. Just us for a research talk and discover the results of this years-long investigation. \n\n\n\nThis is an indoor lecture in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Hunnewell Lecture Hall is wheelchair-accessible. A wheelchair-accessible path up to the building is available to the left of the stairs. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:Growing Plants from Hardwood Cuttings
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nHardwood cuttings are one of the many techniques the Arboretum uses to propagate its plants: propagators take cuttings from the mature stems of woody plants\, carefully trim and coat the ends in rooting hormone\, then plant them in specially designed growing media. Join Arboretum Propagator Sarah Shank for a hands-on workshop to learn this specialized form of propagation: the class will begin with a presentation on the biology of hardwood cuttings\, then head outside to collect our own cuttings from nearby woody plants\, and finally return inside to prepare and root the cuttings in growing media. Participants will bring home a small tray of cuttings to grow into their own small trees and shrubs. \n\n\n\nThis program takes place in the Dana Greenhouse Classroom at 1050 Centre Street. Participants are welcome to park in the greenhouse parking lot for this class. \n\n\n\n*This is a small-capacity class: please only register if you are sure you can attend\, and cancel your registration if your plans change. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program will take place on paved paths and in the wheelchair-accessible Dana Greenhouse classroom. There will be a minimal amount of walking involved. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults.
