SUMMARY:Nature Amplified: The Secret Sounds of Trees
DESCRIPTION:This program was rescheduled from April 19 due to rain. \n\n\n\nIf our ears were 100 times more powerful than they are\, we would be able to hear the sounds produced by trees themselves: water moving through the trunks and branches\, the creak of the wood in the wind\, and small critters moving around in the wood or the canopy. We would even be able to hear how plants receive and respond to sound waves produced by other beings. Our ears are not this powerful\, but artist\, researcher\, and Harvard Graduate School of Design fellow Jacek Smolicki has created microphones and recording systems that are. \n\n\n\nJoin Jacek for an indoor introduction to his specialized microphone technology\, then move outside for a walk to try out the microphones around the landscape and listen to the amplified sounds they create. \n\n\n\nParticipants will use headphones on the walk: you are welcome to bring your own headphones\, though we will provide some as well. Wired and over-the-ear are ideal: bluetooth will not work. \n\n\n\nThis program is part of the Walking Festival of Sound: visit www.wfos.net to learn more. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program will include a walk on paved paths and occasional grass and foliage. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:Cherry Blossoms in Bloom: Music Inspired by Nature
DESCRIPTION:Gather at the cherry blossoms for a one-of-a-kind concert celebrating this beautiful collection in peak bloom. Chloe DeSteno and Ariana Mascari\, graduate students at the New England Conservatory\, have assembled a collection of musical pieces about the cherries\, their cultural and historical impact\, as well as plants and the Arboretum more broadly–including one original piece composed for the Arboretum’s cherry collection itself. The concert will feature a chamber ensemble playing genres from Renaissance to jazz\, all rooted in classical music. \n\n\n\nSeating will be on the grass. We recommend bringing a blanket or lawn chair to sit on if desired\, as chairs will not be provided. \n\n\n\nWe are limiting registration in order to ensure all attendees can see and hear the performers. \n\n\n\nRain date: April 26\, 3:00-4:00pm. Registrants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be rescheduled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be rescheduled with less than one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Bradley Rosaceous Collection lawn is flat and close to the main road\, which is just inside the Arboretum’s Forest Hills Gate. \n\n\n\nAudience: This performance is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:Explorers Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Explorers Garden rests in a microclimate just below the summit of Bussey Hill. This nearly five-acre site provides ideal growing conditions for many species that have been challenging to grow in less protected areas of the Arboretum. As such\, it has proven to be a perfect testing ground for plants collected in the expeditions of E. H. Wilson in the early 1900s to the NACPEC  (North America-China Plant Exploration Consortium) expeditions of our own time. Join docent Marie Herbert for a guided tour to learn more about some of the plants showcased in this special collection and to hear stories of the plant exploration expeditions that brought them to the Arboretum. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This tour will include paved roads and woodchip paths. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed toe walking shoes. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; temperatures below 20 degrees; or other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email or call the Visitor Center at (617) 384-5209 between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Magnolias in Bloom: Music Inspired by Nature
DESCRIPTION:Gather at the magnolias for a one-of-a-kind concert celebrating this beautiful collection in peak bloom. Chloe DeSteno and Ariana Mascari\, graduate students at the New England Conservatory\, have assembled a collection of musical pieces about the magnolias\, their cultural and historical impact\, as well as plants and the Arboretum more broadly–including one original piece composed for the Arboretum’s magnolia collection itself. \n\n\n\nRain date: April 12\, 3:00-4:00pm. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Hunnewell lawn is flat and just off the main road\, which is just inside the Arboretum’s main entrance at Arborway Gate. \n\n\n\nAudience: This performance is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:The Architecture of Trees
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nIn winter\, when all the leaves have fallen\, the stark and beautiful forms of the bare trees suddenly come into focus. It becomes clear that not all tree forms are alike: some trees are cone-shaped\, some round\, some have steep branch angles\, others have branches that stick straight out from the trunk. Join Director of Horticulture and Landscape Rodney Eason for a walk to explore tree architecture at the Arboretum and learn how to use tree form to help identify trees in the winter\, and how the different forms help or harm the trees throughout their lives. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program may involve walking over mulch and gravel paths\, grass\, and off-path terrain. Participants will need to navigate Valley Road\, which is a moderate hill. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:Birding at the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn more about the feathered friends you see and hear on a walk through the Arnold Arboretum? If so\, please join birders and volunteers TJ and Allison for a leisurely 90-minute bird watching walk. We will cover a variety of habitats and focus on the changes that seasonal migration brings to our resident birds\, so come back often to keep up with the seasons! No homework is required\, but binoculars are helpful for spotting in the trees. We’re looking forward to birding with you!
