SUMMARY:All-Ages Insect Safari
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive look at all the tiny critters that crawl\, fly\, or slither through the Arboretum landscape. We will have sweep nets and bug boxes to catch bugs in Kent Field\, digital microscopes to get a closer look\, and entomologists to help us identify everything we find. Plus crafts and book readings for kids! This is an all-ages\, interactive program: come prepared to move around and get up close with some bugs and insects! \n\n\n\nThis is a drop-in event: join us any time between 10:00am and 12:00pm. \n\n\n\nMonica Acker\, the author of the children’s book The Legend of Leo: A Dandy-Lion Tale\, will be doing live readings of her book at 10:30am and 11:15am. In The Legend of Leo\, Leo believes he is a dandeLION–the fierce king of the land\, and won’t believe that he is only a weed. Throughout the story\, we learn the Leo is important\, just not in the way he thought. \n\n\n\nLocation: This event takes place in the Conifer Collection (see map)\, just across the footbridge that leads from Hemlock Hill Road. There will be signs directing participants from Flora Way Gate to the event. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program begins on an intersection of dirt paths in the Conifer Collection\, just over a small wooden bridge. The terrain includes a moderate slope. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: The rain date for this event is August 16. Registrants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if this event needs to be rescheduled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if it must be rescheduled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:Finding Fireflies
DESCRIPTION:When the sun sets and darkness settles on the Arboretum for the night\, every now and then the dark is interrupted by the flash of a firefly. Join Professor Adam South of Tufts University for an evening Firefly Walk to learn about the lives of the fireflies that live here\, the mechanics of how they light up\, and how these unique insects are being impacted by pesticides and light pollution. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves walking on paved roads and mulched paths and climbing moderate slopes. This program takes place after dark. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:Research Spotlight: Bio-Controls for Black Swallow-Wort
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nBlack swallow-wort is a highly invasive vine in the U.S. and Canada\, but in Europe it grows benignly\, kept in check by a number of insect herbivores that only live in that part of the world. But what if we could bring one of those insects to New England? Could it control this highly invasive plant? Professor Lisa Tewksbury from the University of Rhode Island has released a number of Hypena opulenta moths in the Arboretum to see if it would control the black swallow-wort here\, and now it’s time to return to that part of the landscape and see if the experiment has worked. Join Professor Tewksbury for a Research Spotlight to learn about her work and see if we can find evidence of Hypena opulenta larva on the black swallow-wort plants here. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves some moderate hills and off-path terrain. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is appropriate for ages 12+.

SUMMARY:Soundscapes of the Arboretum: A Drop-in Event
DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Hunnewell lawn to experience the sounds of the Arboretum in a new way. Work with a birder to learn how to identify birds from their unique calls\, listen to the sounds of a tree or soil amplified through specially designed microphones\, participate in a “listening launchpad” activity to find sounds around the Arboretum landscape\, engage in conversation prompts about the sounds of the landscape\, and enjoy a guided soundscape meditation. \n\n\n\nMeditations will take place from 9:30–9:45am and 10:30–10:45am. Space is limited and signups will be first-come-first-serve at the event. The location will be a short walk from the rest of the event\, up a moderate slope. \n\n\n\nRegistration is not required for this program. \n\n\n\nJacek Smolicki is a sound artist and researcher with the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Amanda McCluskey and Isabella Febbroriello are recent MassArt graduates with degrees from the Studio for Interrelated Media. They contribute to outreach for Sound Travels\, an educational research project about sound and learning in informal environments. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event takes place on flat mowed grass just off the main road. \n\n\n\nAudience: This event is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: This program will be cancelled or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather and this page will be updated to reflect the change. If the forecast looks poor\, please check this page to determine the event’s status. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.
