SUMMARY:Around the World in 18 Trees
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nThe Arboretum collections hail from over 60 countries\, from Turkey and Morocco to Bhutan and Japan. Join Keeper of the Living Collections Michael Dosmann for a walk across the landscape and discover trees and shrubs from around the world. Along the way\, you will learn about our collecting expeditions\, what parts of the world we can and cannot collect from\, and how the Arboretum uses microclimates and management techniques to grow plants from a wide range of countries. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: Participants may need to navigate mulch paths\, gravel paths\, and off-path terrain. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:Nature Amplified: The Secret Sounds of Trees
DESCRIPTION:This program was rescheduled from April 19 due to rain. \n\n\n\nThis is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nIf our ears were 100 times more powerful than they are\, we would be able to hear the sounds produced by trees themselves: water moving through the trunks and branches\, the creak of the wood in the wind\, and small critters moving around in the wood or the canopy. We would even be able to hear how plants receive and respond to sound waves produced by other beings. Our ears are not this powerful\, but artist\, researcher\, and Harvard Graduate School of Design fellow Jacek Smolicki has created microphones and recording systems that are. \n\n\n\nJoin Jacek for an indoor introduction to his specialized microphone technology\, then move outside for a walk to try out the microphones around the landscape and listen to the amplified sounds they create. \n\n\n\nParticipants will use headphones on the walk: you are welcome to bring your own headphones\, though we will provide some as well. Wired and over-the-ear are ideal: bluetooth will not work. \n\n\n\nThis program is part of the Walking Festival of Sound: visit www.wfos.net to learn more. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program will include a walk on paved paths and occasional grass and foliage. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
