SUMMARY:Tree Mob: Beneficial Mites
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nHave you ever noticed the small tufts of hair found at the intersection of veins on a maple leaf? These structures\, called mite domatia\, provide shelter and protection for predatory mites\, which defend the plant against herbivores and pathogens in return. Join University of Michigan Postdoc and 2026 Carvão Awardee Marianne Azevedo Silva to learn about this mutualistic relationship and the research she is conducting on the mites themselves. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program may involve navigating mulch\, gravel\, and dirt paths. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209. \n\n\n\nImage credit: Robert Pemberton\, Charles Turner

SUMMARY:Research Spotlight: Biodiversity in the Solar Pollinator Meadow
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nThe Horticulture team planted the Solar Array Pollinator Meadow to provide a habitat for a wide variety of insects\, birds\, and other pollinators under and around the Weld Hill solar panels. But until recently\, they had no good way of knowing just how well their experiment was working–that is\, until naturalist Louise Miller took it on as a research project for her Mass Audubon Field Certification. Miller conducted a biodiversity survey of the meadow and recorded 70 species of plants and nearly 300 species of non-plant creatures\, from snails and mushrooms to insects and salamanders. Join Miller to learn about the diversity she found here\, view some of her incredible photographs\, and get a chance to record some observations yourself. \n\n\n\nThis is an outdoor program that meets in front of the Weld Hill Research Building. \n\n\n\nWe will be using iNaturalist (IOS\, Android) to record species observations at the end of the program; we recommend downloading the app ahead of time. There will also be field guides available for anyone who would rather not use the app. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves a small amount of walking on pavement with a mild hill.

SUMMARY:Research Spotlight: Bio-Controls for Black Swallow-Wort
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nBlack swallow-wort is a highly invasive vine in the U.S. and Canada\, but in Europe it grows benignly\, kept in check by a number of insect herbivores that only live in that part of the world. But what if we could bring one of those insects to New England? Could it control this highly invasive plant? Professor Lisa Tewksbury from the University of Rhode Island has released a number of Hypena opulenta moths in the Arboretum to see if it would control the black swallow-wort here\, and now it’s time to return to that part of the landscape and see if the experiment has worked. Join Professor Tewksbury for a Research Spotlight to learn about her work and see if we can find evidence of Hypena opulenta larva on the black swallow-wort plants here. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves some moderate hills and off-path terrain. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is appropriate for ages 12+.

SUMMARY:Flower Visitors at the Arboretum: Can Honeybees and Native Pollinators Co-Exist?
DESCRIPTION:Most of us know honeybees for the delicious honey they create (and the occasional sting!). But for scientists\, the non-native honeybee represents a potential threat to our native bumblebees and butterflies. Biology professor Dr. Richard Primack has been studying these insects at the Arboretum\, observing flower visitors at over 600 plant species to determine if honeybees and native pollinators can co-exist. Just us for a research talk and discover the results of this years-long investigation. \n\n\n\nThis is an indoor lecture in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Hunnewell Lecture Hall is wheelchair-accessible. A wheelchair-accessible path up to the building is available to the left of the stairs. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:Research Spotlight: Mycorrhizae and the Arboretum Truffle
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, the Donald Pfister lab at Harvard University discovered a new species of mycorrhizal truffle at the Arboretum\, related to the famed culinary truffle but genetically distinct. Nine years later the lab is still making new discoveries in the field of mycorrhizae: the fungi that form symbiotic associations with plant roots and provide the plants with extra water and nutrients from the soil in exchange for a steady supply of sugars. \n\n\n\nJoin Professor Don Pfister for a research spotlight on mycorrhizae and the Arboretum truffle\, and learn about the biology of mycorrizae\, how the Arboretum truffle and other mycorrhizae disperse their spores\, and how to go about finding mycorrhizae in the landscape. The group will also take some soil cores and look for evidence of mycorrhizae in the soil. Maybe we’ll find a truffle! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves climbing moderate slopes and walking over mulch paths\, gravel paths\, and mowed grass. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults.
