SUMMARY:Wicked Plants: A Botanical Halloween
DESCRIPTION:On the afternoon of Halloween\, stop by the Hunnewell Lawn to learn about the most sinister plants in the Arboretum’s collections. Armed with spiky thorns\, sticky latex\, and chemical warfare\, these plant species defend themselves from hungry herbivores\, other plants—and sometimes from humans who wander too close. Others try to poison their neighbors\, practice explosive seed dispersal\, or even glow under black light. Drop by for this family friendly event and experience Halloween\, Arboretum-style. \n\n\n\nNo need to register\, just stop by the Hunnewell Lawn between 12:00 and 3:00pm. Kids storytime at 1:00pm! \n\n\n\nIn the event of inclement weather\, this program may be rescheduled: check this event page for the latest updates. The rain date is November 1\, 2:00 to 4:00pm. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Hunnewell Lawn is flat and just off the paved road. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is appropriate for all ages.

SUMMARY:Identifying Oaks and Maples
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nMost of us can point out an oak or a maple by their unique leaf shapes\, but what about telling a black oak from a red oak\, or a Norway maple from a sugar maple? Join herbalist Alex Klein for a class on identifying oak and maple species using leaf shape\, bark\, form\, and other key identification features. The class will focus on species common to Massachusetts streets and forests\, so that you will be prepared to identify the trees around you on your next walk in the woods or around town. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program will cover about a mile of walking over pavement\, dirt paths\, and mulch paths. The path will include some gradual hills. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults. No prior plant ID experience necessary. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:Explorers Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Explorers Garden rests in a microclimate just below the summit of Bussey Hill. This nearly five-acre site provides ideal growing conditions for many species that have been challenging to grow in less protected areas of the Arboretum. As such\, it has proven to be a perfect testing ground for plants collected in the expeditions of E. H. Wilson in the early 1900s to the NACPEC  (North America-China Plant Exploration Consortium) expeditions of our own time. Join docent Marie Herbert for a guided tour to learn more about some of the plants showcased in this special collection and to hear stories of the plant exploration expeditions that brought them to the Arboretum. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This tour will include paved roads and woodchip paths. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed toe walking shoes. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; temperatures below 20 degrees; or other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. SUMMARY:The Cosmic Tree: A Universal Symbol of Life: Ginkgoes and Conifers
DESCRIPTION:Cosmologies are ways of understanding the nature of the universe\, of experiencing the world in all its variations including the visible and the invisible. Over millennia trees have served as the mythological archetype of the world’s axis (axis mundi)\, the pole through the earth’s center which connects the worlds above and below. Within a cosmic-magical model of the world (imago mundi)\, trees also evolved in various cultures to possess innate spiritual powers or as conduits for communication with the holy or sacred. \n\n\n\nDocent Katrina Scott will lead this interactive tour with stops for moments to reflect on specific trees and the stories associated with them. Were they revered or feared?  A home for deities or tricksters?  We will begin at the Walter Street Gate to visit the oldest ginkgoes at the Arboretum\, then head up the Conifer Path and diverge to walk\, rest\, and reflect among various conifers\, eventually ending by the yews near Bussey Brook and Hemlock Hill Road.  Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring a cloth/towel/mat for sitting/lying down.

SUMMARY:Seed Propagation at the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nMany of us assume that growing plants from seed is as simple as opening a seed packet and sticking them in the dirt\, but many of the trees and shrubs in the Arboretum’s collections require a complicated process of stratification\, maceration\, and dormancy breaking before they will sprout. Join Arboretum Propagator Sarah Shank for a workshop on growing these plants from seed and get a chance to try your own hand at germinating seed from Arboretum trees and shrubs. \n\n\n\nThe class will begin with a presentation on the biology of seed dormancy and germination\, and then we will move into the hands-on portion where participants get experience preparing seeds from fruits and dry capsules\, scarifying seeds with different dormancy types\, and finally sowing some seeds to take home. We will round off the experience with a brief tour of the seed treatment facilities and seedling greenhouse. \n\n\n\nAll participants will go home with a tray of seeds they planted. We will be focusing on plants that can easily be grown in a front or backyard\, so you don’t need to worry about finding a place for a 100-foot-tall tree! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program takes place indoors in the wheelchair-accessible DGH classroom and outdoors on mowed grass. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:Beeches Up Close
DESCRIPTION:*This program was rescheduled from September 26 due to rain.* \n\n\n\nThe stately beeches of the Arboretum used to tower over other trees–and some still do–but pests\, diseases\, and other pathogens have taken their toll in recent years. Join Arborist Delia Mahoney for a walk in the beech collection and learn about the challenges these trees have faced\, what the Arboretum is doing in response\, and what the collection looked like in years past. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The beech collection is located on a relatively steep hill\, so participants should expect to do some moderate climbing. Terrain includes woodchip and gravel paths. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:Magnolias Up Close
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nThe Arboretum’s magnolia collection is best known for its showy blossoms in the early spring\, but these trees have something special to share in the fall too: strange\, cone-like seed pods bursting with striking red and orange seeds. Join Director of Horticulture and Landscape Rodney Eason and Arboretum Gardener Sylvia Maina for a tour of the magnolias in all their fall glory. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: Most of the magnolias are clustered right around the Hunnewell Building and lawn\, but the tour may also venture down gravel paths to reach some of more far-flung specimens. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:The Science of Fall Leaf Color
DESCRIPTION:*This program was rescheduled from September 27 due to rain.* \n\n\n\nThe Arboretum becomes a riot of color in the fall with leaves turning deep red\, fiery orange\, and bright yellow. Have you ever wondered why this happens every autumn? Outdoor Educator Ana Maria Caballero will take us through the science of fall leaf color\, including an exploration of pigments and abscission\, a hands-on experiment to reveal the array of pigments present in every leaf\, and a walk in the landscape to take a closer look at leaves in all phases of color change. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program includes a short walk over pavement\, grass\, and gravel. The science experiment will use either acetone or rubbing alcohol so participants will be in close proximity to these substances. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:Charles Sprague Sargent and the American Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Many are aware of Charles Sprague Sargent’s role as first director of the Arnold Arboretum\, establishing it as the world-renowned institution it is today. Far fewer are familiar with how his close relationships and prolific correspondence with figures of national and international prominence in the developing fields of botany\, horticulture\, forestry\, and wilderness preservation or his leadership of seminal public sector projects such as his path-breaking survey of United States forests for the 1880 US Census shaped the American landscape far beyond the Arboretum’s walls. Docent Paul Eldrenkamp will lead a tour that explores the far-reaching influence — then and now– of the Arboretum’s first director.   \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This walk will include paved roads and woodchip and gravel paths.  \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees or due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email or call the Visitor Center at (617) 384-5209 between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Sustainability Spotlight: Irrigation
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nAs climate change leads to increased temperatures and extreme weather patterns\, drought is becoming more and more of a concern at the Arboretum. Staff have been working hard to install irrigation systems around the landscape since the record-breaking drought of 2016\, working to increase the resiliency of our collections to periods of drought and dry weather\, and this fall represents one of the biggest irrigation projects yet. Join Head of Operations and Project Management Danny Schissler and Head Operator Jed Romanowiz to learn how the Arboretum keeps trees watered in areas without irrigation\, the Arboretum’s plans for new irrigation installations\, and how all of these systems actually work. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program involves a short walk over level ground\, including pavement and mulch paths. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults.

SUMMARY:Living Trees\, Living Traditions: Cultural Perspectives on Plant Use
DESCRIPTION:Trees have long played an important role in cultures around the world. On this tour\, we delve into the ethnobotany of trees – how people of different cultures and regions made use of woody plants for food\, medicine\, everyday wooden objects\, dyes\, fibers\, oils\, resins\, gums\, soaps\, waxes\, tannins.  Join docent Vicki Amalfitano to explore how groups from many regions and traditions have historically used bark\, roots\, and leaves from native and exotic trees we have growing at the Arnold Arboretum for a variety of uses. The focus is on cultural knowledge\, meaning\, and relationship—not on medical instruction or other advice.
