SUMMARY:The Cosmic Tree: A Universal Symbol of Life: Ginkgoes & Conifers
DESCRIPTION:Cosmologies are ways of understanding the nature of the universe\, of experiencing the world in all its variations including the visible and the invisible. Over millennia trees have served as the mythological archetype of the world’s axis (axis mundi)\, the pole through the earth’s center which connects the worlds above and below. Within a cosmic-magical model of the world  (imago mundi)\, trees also evolved in various cultures to possess innate spiritual powers or as conduits for communication with the holy or sacred. \n\n\n\nDocent Katrina Scott will lead this interactive tour with stops for moments to reflect on specific trees and the stories associated with them. Were they revered or feared?  A home for deities or tricksters?  We will begin at the Walter Street Gate to visit the oldest ginkgoes at the Arboretum\, then head up the Conifer Path and diverge to walk\, rest\, and reflect among various conifers\, eventually ending by the yews near Bussey Brook and Hemlock Hill Road.  \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This walk will include woodchip and gravel paths. Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring a cloth/towel/mat for sitting/lying down. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees or due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email or call the Visitor Center at (617) 384-5209 between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:The Trees are Speaking by Lynda Mapes
DESCRIPTION:The old-growth forests of Oregon and Washington play a vital role in the ecosystems there\, supporting a wide diversity of life and sequestering carbon in enormous\, long-living trees. The east coast\, by contrast\, has been logged and clear cut for generations and has precious little old-growth forest left. Join environmental journalist and Bullard Fellow at Harvard Forest\, Lynda Mapes\, for a talk about her book “The Trees are Speaking: Dispatches from the Salmon Forests.” In this thought-provoking new book\, Mapes interviews scientists\, loggers\, and Indigenous activists to answer deep questions about the importance of old-growth forests\, the conflicting desires around how to manage them\, and how we can protect these forests into the future. \n\n\n\nThis talk takes place in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall. There is public parking on Arborway\, but parking can get tight with large programs like this: please give yourself some extra time to park and walk to the Hunnewell Building. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The lecture hall is wheelchair-accessible. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.
