SUMMARY:Beeches Up Close
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join! \n\n\n\nThe stately beeches of the Arboretum used to tower over other trees–and some still do–but pests\, diseases\, and other pathogens have taken their toll in recent years. Join Arborist Delia Mahoney for a walk in the beech collection and learn about the challenges these trees have faced\, what the Arboretum is doing in response\, and what the collection looked like in years past. \n\n\n\nThis program meets at South Street Gate\, but please note that there is no parking at this gate: the closest parking is on Flora Way\, which is a 10-minute walk from South Street Gate. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The beech collection is located on a relatively steep hill\, so participants should expect to do some moderate climbing. Terrain includes woodchip and gravel paths. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:The Cosmic Tree: A Universal Symbol of Life: Flowering Trees
DESCRIPTION:Cosmologies are ways of understanding the nature of the universe\, of experiencing the world in all its variations including the visible and the invisible. Over millennia trees have served as the mythological archetype of the world’s axis (axis mundi)\, the pole through the earth’s center which connects the worlds above and below. Within a cosmic-magical model of the world  (imago mundi)\, trees also evolved in various cultures to possess innate spiritual powers or as conduits for communication with the holy or sacred. \n\n\n\nDuring this tour we will discuss angiosperms\, the largest and most diverse group in the plant kingdom. All flowering trees are angiosperms\, but not all angiosperms reproduce in the same way\, so you may not see blooms and flowers but plenty of leaves. Docent Katrina Scott will lead this interactive tour with stops for moments to reflect on specific trees and the stories associated with them. Were they revered or feared?  A home for deities or tricksters?  We will begin at the Center Street Gate starting at Jack Dawson’s shagbark hickory (1883) then head up Oak Path to Beech Path ending at Bussey Hill Road after visiting the ash trees of Norse mythology (Yggdrasil.). \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This walk will include woodchip and gravel paths. Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring a cloth/towel/mat for sitting/lying down. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours will be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees. Tours may be canceled due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event.

SUMMARY:Poisonous Plants
DESCRIPTION:Hidden among the beautiful flowers and innocent-looking shrubs of the Arboretum are some of the world’s most sinister poisons. White snakeroot\, yew and even the beloved rhododendron are all filled to the brim with toxins that have both enticed and tormented people for generations. Join Manager of Adult Programming and Events Sarah Nechamen for a walk to learn about these poisonous plants\, the chemicals they contain\, and the strange histories they carry with them. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program includes so moderate hills\, gravel paths\, and off-path terrain. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults.
