SUMMARY:The Art of the Woodturner
DESCRIPTION:October 17 and 18\, 10:00am–4:00pm each day \n\n\n\nWoodturning is the art or process of fashioning wood into various forms and shapes by means of a lathe. Returning to the Arnold Arboretum for the 11th year\, The Art of the Woodturner will again offer visitors the chance to see an amazing variety of woodturned pieces: large and small\, functional and sculptural. \n\n\n\nWork from three New England clubs will be on view: the Association of Revolutionary Turners\, Central New England Woodturners\, and Massachusetts South Shore Woodturners. Each craftsperson brings their own personal artistic vision to the objects they create\, and the pieces in maple\, cherry\, and other wood offer a unique look at the personality within the wood itself. Be sure to look for pieces turned from Arboretum wood as well. \n\n\n\nExperience in-depth demonstrations on the lathe in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall at 11:00am\, 1:00pm\, and 3:00pm on Saturday and Sunday\, and throughout both days on the Hunnewell lawn. \n\n\n\nRegistration is not required for this event. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The lecture hall is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: This is a rain or shine event.

SUMMARY:All-Ages Insect Safari
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive look at all the tiny critters that crawl\, fly\, or slither through the Arboretum landscape. We will have sweep nets and bug boxes to catch bugs in Kent Field\, digital microscopes to get a closer look\, and entomologists to help us identify everything we find. Plus crafts and book readings for kids! This is an all-ages\, interactive program: come prepared to move around and get up close with some bugs and insects! \n\n\n\nThis is a drop-in event: join us any time between 10:00am and 12:00pm. \n\n\n\nMonica Acker\, the author of the children’s book The Legend of Leo: A Dandy-Lion Tale\, will be doing live readings of her book at 10:30am and 11:15am. In The Legend of Leo\, Leo believes he is a dandeLION–the fierce king of the land\, and won’t believe that he is only a weed. Throughout the story\, we learn the Leo is important\, just not in the way he thought. \n\n\n\nLocation: This event takes place in the Conifer Collection (see map)\, just across the footbridge that leads from Hemlock Hill Road. There will be signs directing participants from Flora Way Gate to the event. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program begins on an intersection of dirt paths in the Conifer Collection\, just over a small wooden bridge. The terrain includes a moderate slope. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: The rain date for this event is August 16. SUMMARY:Crabapples in Bloom: Music Inspired by Nature
DESCRIPTION:This concert was rescheduled from May 2 due to rain. \n\n\n\nGather at Peters Hill Summit for a one-of-a-kind concert celebrating the beautiful crabapple collection in peak bloom. Chloe DeSteno and Ariana Mascari\, graduate students at the New England Conservatory\, have assembled a collection of musical pieces about the crabapples and Peters Hill\, as well as plants and the Arboretum more broadly–including one original piece composed specifically for this part of the Arboretum. The concert will feature a chamber ensemble playing genres from Renaissance to jazz\, all rooted in classical music. \n\n\n\nSeating will be on the grass. We recommend bringing a blanket or lawn chair to sit on if desired\, as chairs will not be provided. \n\n\n\nWe are limiting registration in order to ensure all attendees can see and hear the performers. \n\n\n\nRain date: May 3\, 3:00-4:00pm. SUMMARY:W.S. Merwin: A Talk and Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:This event was rescheduled from March 21. \n\n\n\nW.S. Merwin was famed for his poetry\, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry twice and named the United States Poet Laureate in 2010. But he was also a nature enthusiast with a deep concern for conservation. Merwin bought a plot of former agricultural land in Maui in 1977 and spent 40 years revitalizing the land\, planting nearly 3\,000 species of palm trees\, and the estate is now recognized as one of the most important collections of palms in the world. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a talk and poetry reading celebrating Merwin’s legacy. Speakers will include Sonnet Coggins\, Executive Director of the Merwin Conservancy that was set up to care for Merwin’s land after his death in 2019\, and Matthew Battles\, Arnoldia Editor and author of a feature article on Merwin for this season’s Arnoldia issue. After the talk and Q&A with the audience\, we will move into a participatory poetry reading of Merwin’s works; attendees are welcome to take a turn reading or can simply sit back and listen. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program takes place in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall\, which is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nMake sure to select a number of tickets before clicking “Get Tickets” below!

SUMMARY:Haunted Botany: A Performance for a Forgotten Forest
DESCRIPTION:The towering Eastern White Pine once dominated New England forests and served as an important symbol for Indigenous peoples\, but the British Royal Navy’s thirst for tall\, straight\, trees to use as ship masts eventually led to the destruction of the vast majority of old growth pines in Massachusetts. Join Gwyneth Shanks and AB Brown for a performance piece highlighting Pinus strobus’s dramatic colonial history in which American settlers fought back against King George’s large-scale destruction of their forests\, leading to direct resistance\, riots\, and eventually to the Boston Tea Party itself. \n\n\n\nThe event will begin with a participatory procession through the pines on Peters Hill and up to the Peters Hill summit\, where the performers will unroll a 1200 square foot sail pre-retreated with cyanotype dye\, and arrange archival objects\, texts\, and images on the sail that illustrate the properties and colonial histories of the eastern white pine. At the end of the event\, a large cyanotype print will be revealed which represents the complicated history of this important tree. \n\n\n\nGwyneth Shanks and AB Brown are Assistant Professors of Performance\, Theater\, and Dance at Colby College in Maine. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event involves walking a short distance over mulch paths and ascending the summit of Peters Hill\, which is a short but steep slope. \n\n\n\nAudience: This event is appropriate for ages 12+. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209. \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Auden Barbour
