SUMMARY:Nature Journaling: A Virtual Program
DESCRIPTION:This is a members-only program. Not a member? Click here to join. \n\n\n\nAre you trying to get (back) into a nature-journaling practice? Interested in discovering a new\, creative way to engage with the world of trees? Join this online\, interactive session for some spontaneous and expressive artmaking\, inspired by a tree near you! We will gather online to respond creatively to the trees in our respective corners of the world. The session consists of various free-form sketchbook experiments that celebrate the diversity of tree form. \n\n\n\nAll levels are welcome: neither botanical knowledge nor previous drawing experience are required. \n\n\n\nBring your own plant materials from a tree near you (twigs\, leaves\, flowers\, seeds\, pieces of bark– anything that sparks your interest!) as well as art supplies like paper\, scissors\, markers\, glue\, and tape. We will send a full list via email. \n\n\n\nThis activity is led by botanist and creative facilitator Kristel Schoonderwoerd. Kristel spent many years in the living collections of the Arnold Arboretum gathering data for her PhD degree. She currently lives and creates on her narrowboat on the British Canal and facilitates (online) nature-inspired artmaking events. \n\n\n\nAudience: This members-only program is geared towards ages 12+ \n\n\n\nZoom link: You will receive a Zoom link when you register below.

SUMMARY:Sketch Your Way to Tree ID
DESCRIPTION:Use the power of art to hone your tree ID skills in this interactive class. The group will walk through the landscape\, learning to identify common trees and shrubs and sketching out key identification characteristics. By the end of the program\, participants will have a packet of identification tips and drawings for various plants\, and a deeper understanding of the characteristics that make each tree species unique. No prior art skills necessary—this class focuses on seeing shapes\, patterns\, and details that make each species identifiable. Join us for a creative and hands-on approach to tree identification! \n\n\n\nLed by artist and educator Erica Beade\, and Sarah Nechamen\, Manager of Adult Programming and Events. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This program will cover mulch and crushed stone paths. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared for ages 12+. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:Plant-Based Fabric Dyeing: A Drop-In Event
DESCRIPTION:*Rescheduled to August 30 due to rain* \n\n\n\nMany of the plants grown at the Arboretum have been used as natural dyes for centuries: goldenrod for yellow\, stinging nettle for green\, madder or bloodroot for pink. Join fiber artist Maggie Ruth Haaland on the Hunnewell Lawn to learn about some of these natural dyeing methods and get a chance to try some of your own. \n\n\n\nThis is a drop-in event: stop by any time between 12 and 3pm. The last fabrics will enter the dye baths at 2:30 to allow time for steeping. \n\n\n\nFabric and dye baths will be provided. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Hunnewell Lawn is a flat\, grassy area. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: This web page will be updated at least one day in advance if this event needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.
