Barking Up the Right Tree: A Tour of Bark Diversity at the Arboretum

What is there to see at the Arboretum after all of the leaves have fallen and before spring flowers start to bloom? Bark! Shaggy bark, mottled bark, striped bark: the Arboretum has it all. Join Horticulturist Rachel Lawlor to see some beautiful bark highlights, learn how to identify some trees by their bark, and learn why that bark looks the way it does. 

Accessibility: This program will involve walking over grassy slopes, paved roads, mulch paths, and quite possibly some snow. We will be outside the whole time so dress for the weather!

Audience: This program is geared towards adults.

Inclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. By subway

Take the MBTA Orange Line to its southern end—Forest Hills. Exit through the door marked “Arnold Arboretum.” Cross Washington Street and walk up Arborway to the Arboretum’s Forest Hills Gate on your left. Enter the gate and walk straight up the road, follow the curve and head up Bussey Hill Road until you encounter the driveway leading to the Dana Greenhouses on your right.

By bus

Take the #35 or #38 bus to Centre Street @ Faulkner Hospital. Cross Centre Street, walk north up Centre Street for a few minutes, and enter through the Centre Street Gate on the right. Take a left and walk down Bussey Hill Road about a minute until you encounter the driveway leading to the Dana Greenhouses on your left.

By car

Park on Arborway near Forest Hills Gate. After entering through Forest Hills Gate, walk straight up the road, follow the curve and head up Bussey Hill Road until you encounter the driveway leading to the Dana Greenhouses on your right.
