African Drumming in the Oaks

Join us in the Arboretum’s oak collection for a lively performance of African drumming and dancing, with Malian musician Joh Camara and his award winning dance company Troupe Sewa. This professional international ensemble of dancers and musicians offers exciting, masterful performances of traditional West African drumming and dance. Their work is based on traditional rhythms and dance steps, woven together through original stories.

This performance will take place on the grass: blankets or camp chairs are encouraged.

Sidi Mohamed Camara, popularly known as “Joh,” is a Boston-based musician, dancer, and educator. Originally from Bamako, Mali in West Africa, Joh now teaches traditional Mande culture, language, music, and dance at schools and community centers around Boston. He also collaborates with organizations such as Boston Ballet, Boston Symphony Youth Orchestra and Choir, Upward Bound, Planet Aid, and Metropolitan Museum in New York City.

Accessibility: The performance location is a level, grassy area just off the paved Valley Road.

Audience: This program is appropriate for all ages.
