SUMMARY:Oak Collection Tour
DESCRIPTION:Oaks have been more closely associated with the development of human civilizations across the northern hemisphere than any other genus of tree. From the Royal Oak to the Charter Oak to the Emancipation Oak\, from wine and whisky barrels to tall ships to the roof of Notre Dame\, from King John to Shakespeare to Leonardo da Vinci\, oaks have been inextricably entwined with the human experience. Join docent Paul Eldrenkamp as we learn more about the cultural history of oaks and explore what it is that makes them so useful\, so distinct — and so essential. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This walk will include woodchip and gravel paths. Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring a cloth/towel/mat for sitting/lying down. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; and temperatures below 20 degrees or due to other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email or call the Visitor Center at (617) 384-5209 between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Bike Tour of the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:With a park as large as the Arboretum\, a bike ride is one of the best ways to see the entire landscape in one trip. Join Director of Horticulture and Landscape (and personal bike enthusiast) Rodney Eason for a bike tour of the Arboretum: we will begin in front of the Hunnewell Building and ride all the way to Peters Hill\, stopping to learn about various collections along the way. Rodney will share his expertise on the maples\, hickories\, mountain laurels\, ginkgoes\, paw paws\, and more\, before getting back on our bikes and pedaling to the next stop! \n\n\n\nBikes not provided: please bring your own bike and helmet. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The ride covers all paved roads in the Arboretum except for the summit of Bussey Hill\, for a total of 2.5 miles. The landscape includes several moderate hills. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least one day in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather\, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less one day’s notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu (inbox monitored on weekdays) or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

SUMMARY:The Art of the Woodturner
DESCRIPTION:October 17 and 18\, 10:00am–4:00pm each day \n\n\n\nWoodturning is the art or process of fashioning wood into various forms and shapes by means of a lathe. Returning to the Arnold Arboretum for the 11th year\, The Art of the Woodturner will again offer visitors the chance to see an amazing variety of woodturned pieces: large and small\, functional and sculptural. \n\n\n\nWork from three New England clubs will be on view: the Association of Revolutionary Turners\, Central New England Woodturners\, and Massachusetts South Shore Woodturners. Each craftsperson brings their own personal artistic vision to the objects they create\, and the pieces in maple\, cherry\, and other wood offer a unique look at the personality within the wood itself. Be sure to look for pieces turned from Arboretum wood as well. \n\n\n\nExperience in-depth demonstrations on the lathe in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall at 11:00am\, 1:00pm\, and 3:00pm on Saturday and Sunday\, and throughout both days on the Hunnewell lawn. \n\n\n\nRegistration is not required for this event. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The lecture hall is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is appropriate for all ages. \n\n\n\nInclement weather policy: This is a rain or shine event.

SUMMARY:Mushroom Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of mushrooms hide beneath the Arboretum’s canopies\, silently blossoming into unique forms then withering away again just as quickly. Join local mushroom enthusiast Maria Pinto to search for these fascinating organisms on the Arboretum grounds\, both edible and poisonous alike. Along the way you will learn what mushrooms to look for in different habitats and seasons\, how they move through ecosystems\, and what the Arboretum’s unique collections affect what mushrooms you might find here. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: Participants will need to navigate woodchip\, gravel\, and dirt paths\, and climb moderate hills (Hemlock Hill\, specifically).

SUMMARY:Explorers Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Explorers Garden rests in a microclimate just below the summit of Bussey Hill. This nearly five-acre site provides ideal growing conditions for many species that have been challenging to grow in less protected areas of the Arboretum. As such\, it has proven to be a perfect testing ground for plants collected in the expeditions of E. H. Wilson in the early 1900s to the NACPEC  (North America-China Plant Exploration Consortium) expeditions of our own time. Join docent Marie Herbert for a guided tour to learn more about some of the plants showcased in this special collection and to hear stories of the plant exploration expeditions that brought them to the Arboretum. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This tour will include paved roads and woodchip paths. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed toe walking shoes. \n\n\n\nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \n\n\n\nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; temperatures below 20 degrees; or other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event.
