Arnoldia special issue garners awards

May 11, 2011

Last year’s special issue of Arnoldia (Vol. 68, No. 2) has received the 2011 Dorothy E. Hansell Publication Award from the American Public Gardens Association (APGA), and a 2011 Silver Award of Achievement from the Garden Writers Association. The issue features a 20-year retrospective on the work of the North America–China Plant Exploration Consortium (NACPEC), a unique organization that has had great success exploring and collecting plants within the amazingly diverse flora of China. Through text and photographs, this issue tells the story of the history, accomplishments, and future of NACPEC.

The Arnold Arboretum is a member of NACPEC—fittingly, given the Arboretum’s long history of plant exploration in China. Much has changed in the one-hundred-plus years since renowned plant explorer Ernest Henry Wilson’s expeditions to China on behalf of the Arboretum, but NACPEC explorers encounter some of same challenges (and rewards) on their modern-day expeditions. The collaborative relationship among NACPEC member institutions provides an ideal platform for extensive collection, distribution, and evaluation of the plants collected in China.
