The Italian Grand Tour
with Marie Stella,
Landscape Historian
2007 September 5–20
There are still spaces available for this tour. Contact the Registrar's Office to enroll.
On this in-depth, total-immersion study tour, Landscape Institute students, alumni, and friends will follow in the footsteps of gardenmakers from the eighteenth century to the present who valued the immediacy of firsthand work in the field. Superlative landscapes from Pompeii to the magnificent gardens of Rome and the splendid Renaissance villas in and around Florence will provide glimpses of remarkable works of art and insight into Italian culture. Exemplary contemporary landscapes and artists' gardens will further broaden intellectual horizons. Leading authorities in their field will give lectures on restoration, classical, and cutting-edge garden design and on conservation of resources. Ample time is allotted for independent study and other self-directed pursuits.
A selection of sites include—but are not limited to—Pompeii, Villa la Foce, Villa Medici in Fiesole, Villa Gamberaia, Villa Lante, Le Balze, Villa d’Este, the Boboli Gardens, Bomarzo, Ninfa and the medieval hill town of Sermoneta, St. Peter’s, the Vatican Museum and Gardens, Villa Medici in Rome, Palazzo Reale, San Liberato, Parco di Celle, Pietro Porcinai’s Villa Il Roseto, La Scarzuola, the Bardini Garden, and Villa la Pietra. A more detailed itinerary will be available November 27.
Additional Information
Students will participate in a Terra Cotta workshop in Impruneta and an exclusive nursery tour. There will be lecture presentations by the tour leader and historian Marie Stella, onsite touring with garden owners, directors, and head gardeners. Free excursion time will be available to visit local museums, vineyards, shopping, and an optional mud-bath at a historical spa.
Please contact Marie Stella directly at 413.625.2009 with further questions about the tour.
