Sue first came to the Arboretum in 2007 as an Isabella Welles Hunnewell intern and returned the following fall as the Curatorial Fellow; she’s held her current position since 2009. She manages numerous areas on the grounds, most notably the Leventritt Shrub and Vine Garden, but also the viburnums, Linden Path, and the meadow located at the Arborway entrance. She has also taught classes through the Adult Education program and sits on the Arboretum’s Integrated Pest Management Committee.

Sue enjoys giving back to the community; she volunteers regularly with Boston river clean-up efforts, the Emerald Necklace Conservancy (ENC) Kelleher Rose garden, and is a member of the ENC Maintenance and Restoration Working Group. She was recently awarded volunteer of the year for 2011. In addition to her work with the ENC, Sue is also involved with the Neponset River Watershed Association as a beetle rancher with the Purple Loosestrife Project for wetland restoration and as a water quality monitor within the Citizen Water Monitoring Network. Together with fellow Horticultural Technician Kit Ganshaw, Sue provides scouting information for the East (Boston) region for the University of Massachusetts Landscape Message.

Prior to Sue’s arrival at the Arboretum, she has worked for Sheridan Nurseries, Maple Hill Tree Services, the Toronto Civic Center (now the Toronto Botanical Gardens), and the Niagara Parks Botanical Garden and Butterfly Conservatory.

Besides horticulture, Sue is fascinated with the insect world around her and can often be found experimenting or out collecting day or night. Sue enjoys traveling to gardens, arboreta, parks and forests. She also enjoys the symphony, foreign films, hiking, and hockey.
