clicking on the scientific name in the
plant detail view. Or simply add the

Map Tools

Find Arboretum
Tap to zoom to the Arnold Arboretum.
 
Destinations
Tap to display a list of areas in the Arnold Arboretum and zoom to that area. Tap the back arrow to go back to the map.
 
Tours
The tours are featured plant highlights in the Arboretum. Tap a tour to turn it on or off. Tap the back arrow to go back to the map.
 
Layers
View different data layers currently available. Tap a layer to turn the layer on or off. Tap the back arrow to go back to the map.
 
Observations
Arnold Arboretum Observation Corps is a new initiative at the Arboretum. Tap the Observation menu button to find out how to participate. Tap the back arrow to go back to the map.
 
Zoom to your location Zoom to your location
Click on the bullseye icon to zoom to your own location.

Map Navigation

Pan the map
Swipe the map in the desired direction to change the map extent.
 

Zoom In
Tap the plus icon in the upper lefthand corner of the map. Alternatively, double-tap the map to zoom to a location.
 

Zoom Out
Tap the minus icon in the upper lefthand corner of the map.

Plants by Country

The Plants by Country layer assigns a color to the plant based on the country of origin. This applies only to our wild collected plants, currently 35% of the collection. This explains why not all of the plants have a color associated with it. A key to the colors is coming soon.

Plant Information

Identify plants on the map
Zoom in to a location until the plant icons (colored or green dots) become visible. Tap a plant icon to retrieve it's name; tap the right arrow for detailed information. If more than one plant is selected, use the left and right arrows under the plant name on the popup window to scroll through them.
 

Search for plants
Tap the search tool to display the search controls and choose your criteria. Enter your search string into the text input control and press the Search button or your device's enter key to search the plants. Use the left and right arrows under the plant name on the popup window to scroll through them; tap the right arrow for detailed information.

Plant Tours

Our new web application allows you to take self-guided tours of featured plants in our landscape. Click/tap on the Tours menu item and then select the first list item, "Plant Tours." Check off the box next to the tour(s) you would like to view and then click/tap the Back button at the top of the page. Each tour has a different colored leaf icon. In the map view, click/tap on a leaf icon to get a plant name and image; click/tap the circled arrow on the right to get more detailed information.
 
Also, share links to tours by adding the tour name to the end of the URL, e.g., http://arboretum.harvard.edu/explorer/?tour=maple. The name in red should just be changed to the tour name (e.g., maple, bark, azalea, conifer, crabapple, dwarfconifer, rhododendron, shrubs, vines).

Add a Bookmark

To add a bookmark on your iPhone,
go to your browser (e.g., Safari, Chrome)
and click the center button with an arrow,
and click the Bookmark icon. Next time you open
your browser, go to Bookmarks in the bottom menu
and click your link.

Map Reorientation

Phone reorientation is only possible via native OS applications (iOS and Android). Arboretum Explorer is a web application, so we sacrifice some functionality to reach all web-enabled mobile devices.
 
While it doesn't orient the map to the direction you are facing, if you are on an iPhone 5 you should see a blue cone radiating out from the blue dot, this is how you can tell which direction you're facing.

About Observations

Recording data about our living plants helps test scientific hypotheses, and creates invaluable biological baselines for detecting the effects of environmental change. We need many feet on the ground to make these data records, many more than the Arboretum staff possess, and we are calling on the plant lovers of Boston to help us.

We have initiated a group called the Arnold Arboretum Observer Corps (AAOC), made up of members of the public who have attended a short training course. AAOC participants are authorized to make botanical observations and directly upload images of our plants. At the moment, our primary observation project is recording plants' phenological status (in bud, flowering, fruiting, leafless, etc.), using methods aligned with the National Phenological Network.

You can see the latest observations and photographs made by the AAOC by clicking on the Observations menu tab. If you are interested in joining the AAOC, please email Julie Warsowe, and check the main Arboretum website to find the date of the next AAOC training event.
